COMPLETE GUIDE TO DOOR REPAIR AND MAINTENANCE NOW UPDATED

Article first published 29/09/2009

The latest best practice procedures for the repair and maintenance of industrial, commercial and fire resisting doors and shutters are identified in the Code of Practice to be issued by the Door & Hardware Federation (DHF).

The Code of Practice for the Repair and Maintenance of Industrial and Commercial Doors has been completely updated by the DHF, the organisation which represents the UK’s leading suppliers and repairers of industrial and commercial metal doors and shutters. The guide can be downloaded from their website, www.dhfonline.org.uk .

It is the latest in a growing range of Codes of Practice and Good Practice Guides from the DHF designed to raise quality levels in the door and hardware industry and to ensure compliance with the latest European standards.

This latest repair and maintenance guide has been produced specifically to help manufacturers, repair and maintenance organisations, specifiers and end users comply fully with all the requirements of the safety enforcement authorities.

The Code spells out what repair and maintenance organisations should do to achieve optimum quality of operation with maximum safety in use throughout the full expected life cycle of the equipment.

It also lists legal requirements and guidance documents, gives definitions of common terminology and identifies the specific documentation needed for correct repair and maintenance. Necessary operational documentation and minimum requirements for repair and maintenance personnel are also described.

Said DHF secretary Michael Skelding: “The importance of regular door and shutter maintenance on both legal and financial grounds cannot be over emphasised. Existing regulations relating to fire safety use of work equipment and workplace health & safety already require owners and managers of business premises to ensure that doors and shutters are maintained regularly according to usage.

“In addition, the financial benefits of planned routine maintenance against high-cost emergency call-outs are plain to see. In the current recession, there is the temptation to save money by cutting back on maintenance, but this truly would be a case of ‘penny wise, pound foolish’.”
